Founding Argent member and bassist for The Kinks and The Zombies, Jim Rodford, died Saturday, January 20. The musician was 76 years old.

The death was confirmed in a statement to The Zombies’ Facebook page by Rodford’s cousin and bandmate Rod Argent. While Argent notes that Rodford passed “after a fall on the stairs,” the exact cause of death remains unclear.

As the below statement reads, Rodford was the first to be asked to join The Zombies, although he didn’t join the band until the late ‘90s. He was also a founding member of Argent who went on to play bass in The Kinks in the late ‘70s.

Below, read the statement from Rodford’s cousin, as well as tributes by The Kinks, Kinks member Dave Davies, and Zombies member Colin Blunstone.

Rodford vehemently supported local music and earned a Doctorate of Music last year at the University of Hertfordshire.
